A dental bridge is used to “bridge the gap” in your smile by replacing missing teeth. Generally used when there is more than one missing tooth, a dental bridge will restore heath and function to your smile.

The long term effects of missing teeth can lead to serious problems including:

  • Problems with the position of your bite
  • Affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Create speech impediments
  • Lead to increased risk of gum disease or tooth decay

A fixed dental bridge is one that can only be removed by a professional dentist. These include:

  • Conventional fixed dental bridges
  • Cantilever dental bridges
  • Resin-bonded dental bridges

While there are other options for replacing missing teeth, including dental implants and dentures, a dental bridge is popular because it tends to be less expensive and involved than the dental implant procedure but still offers a permanent fit, where dentures are usually removable.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Restore your smile by closing gaps due to missing teeth
  • Allow you to chew and speak comfortably and properly
  • Maintain the shape of your face to prevent the cheeks and lips from sagging or drooping
  • Allow you to bite properly by distributing forces evenly so that you don’t put extra pressure on one side or another
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, potentially creating additional problems

Dental Bridge Process

  1. A comprehensive evaluation to examine your condition and review your treatment options
  2. The teeth neighboring the gap are prepared by removing a tiny portion of tooth enamel (This is done so that they can accommodate the dental crowns which will be placed over these teeth to support the dental bridge)
  3. An impression of your teeth is made and sent to the dental laboratory that will make your dental bridge
  4. A temporary dental bridge is created for you to wear while your permanent dental bridge is being made
  5. When the permanent dental bridge arrives from the dental laboratory, the temporary dental bridge is removed and the fit and color of the permanent dental bridge are checked
  6. When the fit and color are perfected, the permanent dental bridge is cemented into place
